I've been connected to the Angeles Crest 100 Mile Endurance Run since 1991, when I ran my first 100.
This is the place where I began to execute the idea of the Finish Line Portrait Project. In 2004 I realized that running photography was either "Patagonia pictorialism" [and they do that very well], sports photo-journalism, and casual snapshots. I decided to use my 10 years in ultramarathons to document this one aspect of the sport.
It took five starts, three finishes, to get to one sub-24 hour finish. In 1997 I captained the remote Idle Hour Aid Station [81.9mi], and have been the editor of the AC100 Race Book since 1998.

Many of the best visuals come from the oft-ignored "back-of-the-pack". George Velasco crossed the 2007 WS100 finish line with the express desire to be photographed. I missed him, but promised him that I would be waiting for him at the AC100 finish for his ninth finish. His wife is happier than he is.
Guillermo Medina had won Angeles Crest in 2005, and finished 3rd in 2006. And here he was.

I also want to thank all the runners who have given their time and energy at the end of a very long day-night-day to stand for another 20 seconds in front of the camera as well. Without you, it would not happen.

Background Note: When I was running ultras, I finished 9 100's. There were also about 20 50-milers, 25 or so 50ks, and way too many 25-to-40 mile training runs. My first sub-24 hr time was at Angeles Crest. My second and last buckle was Leadville in 1997. The last 100 I finished was Wasatch in t998.
