The Literary Muse

Introduction

We first began keeping track of the entrant's literary talent in 2002. We have not been disappointed.

How to make the Baldy Peaks 50K even more challenging...

Fall. Really hard. On pavement. During mile ONE.

Be sure to land on your right knee cap and right hand, and don't forget to slide down the road upon said body parts. After all, those little bits of gravel the ER doctor had to remove from beneath layers of subcutaneous flesh can be cherished as souvenirs and the RD may want to award them to a future fumbler next year. Besides, the curiousity as to how much more blood can possibly be lost before one loses consciousness gives the runner something else to ponder besides the sheer uphill agony that is otherwise known as the Sierra Club Hut.

When aid station personnel inquire as to whether or not you would like a band-aid, inform them that you don't have any infectious diseases and simply reply "I don't need no stinkin' band-aids, just fill these with cold Gatorade." (On a humorous note, co-RD Andy Roth joked with me that it is actually the runners who should be concerned about acquiring diseases from aid station personnel!)

After 7 hours and 46 minutes of running while bleeding, stick around the finish line for a few salty snacks and give the sweat trickling from your body ample opportunity to seep into the open wounds. Then make your way to Cedars-Sinai emergency room and endure an hour and a half of cleansing, scrubbing, and general prodding of the injuries, followed by a tetanus shot and a prescription for antibiotics capsules that are the size of small children.

In conclusion, I had a terrific time and truly look forward to next year!

Thanks Andy & Larry.

P.S. Mom, remember how I always wanted a motorcycle? Well, nevermind.
